I find myself having been on quite the big music kick lately.

So naturally, I have a Spotify profile so I can have a playlist for my books, characters and the Mississippi River pack in general. I have always enjoyed working while listening to music, and I know that this isn't a brand new concept for authors, but it's still very fun.

If a song even remotely reminds me of a mood for a scene (or future scene), or just the flash of a character's personality or back story, or even if it just helps me set the mood for inspiration to write, I automatically add it to my Mississippi River Pack play list. I have playlists for books, and characters and the reason for why each song is there is long, but each song for sure pulls something from my creative side.

I'm a very strong believer that there is a huge difference between:

  • The artist

  • The art

  • The fandom

This is NOT saying I personally believe that we should separate the art from the artist, but in music the argument could be made, with in reason.

I have experienced where the fans of an artist overplay their music so much when they are around that you start to get annoyed by the artist themselves, even though the music is actually good, and the artist seems like they would be a cool person, it was the fandom overplaying (and sometimes doing other stupid things) that can color the opinion in general.

While my playlists are still in progress and being changed and added too, I still love looking at other authors playlists and thinking about "Oh yeah I totally see why that would inspire this." or "I have no idea what you would get from this song writing this book but it worked."

My playlists for my books and characters can have some songs that overlap as it's possible for the same song to have multiple meanings for me in my inspiration, but how I'm going to try to have it to where all the songs on the book and character playlists can be centralized in the Mississippi River Pack playlist. You know, for those days that just feel kinda random and all over the place.

There are so many songs out in the world and like I said this is an ongoing process (much like my books lol). Perhaps there will be a future blog post (or a few) showing some of the songs with short explanations on why it belongs on the playlist.

Would you be interested in that? Do you listen to music when working? Do you want to be friends on Spotify?

Let me know what you think.
